Cat-Napper
Friday, April 10, 2009

I was just reading some Excerpts from Elizabeth Pantley new book "The No-Cry Nap" Solution and realised that our darling Caleb is a cat napper!!!

She describes Cat-Nappers in her book as the following, "Does your baby fall asleep being fed, while in a car seat, sling, rocker, or someone’s arms? When transferred to bed, does your baby then sleep 30 to 50 minutes? That’s the exact length of one sleep cycle. These factors combined define the main cause of mini-naps: an inability to fall asleep or stay asleep without aid – your baby wakes fully at the end of the first sleep cycle, resulting in a too-short nap."

While I'm typing this post, Caleb is 20mins into his mid morning nap in our new Beco Carrier with me swaying left to right, left to right, observing his sleep cycle. Indeed so far, all of E. Pantley's descriptions of the sleep stages can be found with Caleb's sleep habits!

Stage 1- Very Light Sleep (5 to 15 mins)

I was watching the clock 9.55am to 10.10am-That's exactly 15mins!!! How predictable you are our little one! He stirrs, I began to rock him for about 1min or so, he continues to be in lala land...

Stage 2- Light to Moderate Sleep (Lasts up to 15mins)

10.10am to 10.20am, he stirrs yet again, I have to sway once again!

Stage 3-Deep Sleep(Last up to 15mins)

Only 15mins??? Oh my gosh yup between 10.30 to 10.35am he kept rubbing his face against the carrier, he opens his eyes, he is not too happy. I pop in the pacifier, sway and rock but he couldn't go back to sleep again. So I had to take him out of the carrier and swaddle him, pop in the pacifier and pat him to sleep once again... It's 10.55am, he is finally asleep on his little mattress all swaddled, eyes closed, pacifier in his mouth. Well I guess we never made it pass Stage 3!!!

Hopefully this 10.55am sleep cycle lasts! He seems to dislike the swaddle very much though, but yet when he sleeps, he sleeps better with it. He refuse to sleep on his tummy although he likes tummy time! Gosh how else can we help him sleep better without getting startled easily??? I'm still keeping him in his swaddling blankie though... As parents, our ultimate goal is for our babies to have a good sleep so that they will grow well and be happy babies! It begs me to think whether I should follow what my mum does when she looks after my nephew, to put him in a hammock for his naps, well at least my nephew does sleep better with the hammock and my mum was free with her hands to do other stuff! And for that I think my nephew used it till he was at least 2 years old!

Well anywayz, let's persevere on and be patient with our little cat-napper here and decide a while later. As for now, he is still doing pretty good. I really envy those parents who have little ones who can just fall asleep on their own... Guess we'll just have to keep trying!

*** Update, he slept for a full 1hr with his swaddler blankie and pacifier before waking up, crying!
