No Cries Sleep Training!

Caleb napping in his crib...

We didn't know when it started but before we knew it, Caleb had learnt the bad habit of sleeping with us in bed or in our arms! Not that we are complaining since we both love having him sleep next to us! Watching him wake up in the morning and giving us his adorable beautiful smiles. But we know that in the long term he might never get out of our bed! :) Plus his beautiful crib will be left unused!

At first I thought that sleep training him in his own crib is going to be a long process so far its been about 4 or 5 days and its been great! From sleeping in your arms to once you put him down and he wakes up immediately to 5mins on his own sleeping in his crib to 15mins and now half an hr without you having to be near the crib, we definitely see some improvement!!!

A safari mobile that we bought for him yesterday! Seems like we so love animals that all his stuff are in the theme with animals haha!

Here are some tips which I've gotten from this book, "the no-cry sleep solution" by Elizabeth Pantley and I find the book a total inspiration for parents like us! If given a choice most of us would not want our kids to go through the crying out method of training! But I believe everyone of us go through different experiences since every baby has their own individual character so I guess the key is to persevere! There are many many tips in the book but so far I've only tried out these few...

1. A baby who always sleeps in your arms will always sleep in your arms! When your baby is asleep put him down in his bed if you can and when you can. If you can't its ok, treasure every moment of having your baby in your arms... you know that you will miss it very soon when they grow up and no longer is your little baby!

2. If your baby falls sleep while nursing or even when using the pacifier, let your baby suck until he is sleepy then remove the pacifier or breast. This way in the long run, your baby will require less help from you to fall asleep and will start to sleep on his own. If your baby fuss when you remove, it is ok to give him again and start over a few minutes later. Repeat, repeat, repeat!

3. Don't let your baby nap too long if you find that he sleeps long in the day but less in the night. You can wake your baby up during his lighter stage of sleep when you see movement in his limbs. Do wake him up if he has sleep more than 2 or 3 hrs. So far Caleb does not have any problems distinguishing between night and day even if he has a long 3hr nap in the afternoon. Phew...

4. Swaddling- I realise Caleb startles and wakes up really easily!!! And he hates to be swaddle when he was about 2 weeks old. But this past few days I've pit him back in his kiddopotamus swaddle and he appears to be alright with it! Plus he sleeps better and longer!!!

5. Get familiar with your baby sleepy signals and put him to bed as soon as he seems tired! When babies become overtired, they get overstimulated and finds it harder to fall asleep. For Caleb his signs of sleepiness are, decrease in activity, losing interest in ppl and things, yawning and looking stoned!

6. Develop bedtime routines. So far Caleb's routine is get his sponge bath, read books or sing songs, stay with us in he living room while we watch tv under low noises, lights out, breastfeed, rock to sleep.

7. Help your baby learn that his crib is a nice place. In the afternoon when he is awake and happy, put him in his crib, play or read to him. Daddy bought him a crib mobile yesterday to entertain and to show him that his crib is a happy place! So far so good. Ih he is very attached to you, you can even put the bedsheets in your tshirt for a few hrs so that it has your scent in it!

Well we still definitely need to continue with this sleep training, sometimes I get really tired in the afternoon that I gave us a break and lets him sleep in the bed with me to catch on some rest. And it is indeed helpful not to overstress with the training and take your time and cut yourself some slack otherwise you might get so frustrated and your baby will too with sleep deprivation!
